Pergolas are most often made from wood or metal. Wooden pergolas blend into the outdoors while metal pergolas provide a more modern aesthetic. Metal pergolas offer durability as they are typically constructed using steel or aluminium. Wood effect pergolas are a balance between both materials, allowing you to infuse your garden with a traditional look with all the benefits of aluminium.
It is important to ensure that the foundation for your pergola and surrounding area can accommodate it securely. Aim to place your pergola somewhere that receives gentle sunlight, so that light can filter through the structure while still providing some relief from the sun when required. Placing the pergola near flowers, water features, or pathways can enhance the overall aesthetic. For more technical information please contact our customer service team for guidance and support.
Pergolas are intended to create shade whilst also letting some sunlight through, with the louvred roof design providing the necessary shade. You can also purchase pergolas with roofs and enjoy the extra function of a retractable roof that can be open or closed according to your preference. If you require more shade, a pergola with sides could be the answer, shielding you from sunlight on one or more sides, depending on where you position it.
To look after your pergola you should:
- Regularly check your pergola for any signs of wear and tear and address any issues promptly.
- Clean your pergola, removing dirt, debris, and any plant growth with mild soap and water.
- If you have any climbing plants, be sure to trim them back to prevent them becoming invasive and entangled around the louvres.
- Clear the roof or slats of excess snow or leaves that build up in winter to avoid unnecessary weight on top.
As our pergolas are metal pergolas, there is very little maintenance required versus wooden pergolas.
Pergolas offer shade, shelter and aesthetic appeal. The crossbeam design allows for both sunlight and shade, and you can also choose a pergola with a roof for extra protection from the elements. A pergola can create charming lounge areas, define outdoor eating spaces, and serve as a stylish and functional living space for patios, decks, or gardens.
Generally speaking, pergolas are considered a permitted development. This means you can construct a garden pergola without obtaining formal planning permission, as long as it meets the following criteria:
i It must be under 2.5 metres high and not covering more than 50% of your garden
However, if it is bigger than this, will be installed on a raised platform, or your home is a listed building, you are more likely to need planning permission and should consult your local council.
